Kimberly Martines, 23, of Spartansburg, SC did one of the worst things a parent can do. She purposely hurt her child! Martines, who was separated from her husband, would do anything to get back with him. She took it upon herself to poison their 17 month old daughter, Peyton.

Kimberly fed her daughter a tablespoon of salt and then “had her follow through with a drink after that,” according reports. “She basically did that to try and get her husband’s attention — to get him back into her life,” the state prosecutor said. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Peyton was hospitalized the same day and suffered from seizures and a high fever. Doctors diagnosed the toddler with acute salt poisoning. Two days after arriving at the hospital, she was unresponsive so doctors placed her on life support. On Wednesday afternoon, the 17 month old was taken off life support and passed away. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Martines, who was originally charged with felony child abuse, had her charges upgraded to homicide by child abuse. Martines’ two other children, one of whom is Peyton’s twin, have been placed in protective custody. If convicted, Martines can face up to 20 years in prison.

Tiffany Lizar, Martines sister, made a statement about her sister. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“She would’ve never done anything to hurt her kids at all. There’s a lot more that went on than people understand. No one should judge her at all, and there’s nothing in this world that would make her hurt her babies.”

If there is too much sodium in the bloodstream it can cause water to rush out of our cells to dilute it. When that happens the cells shrink and become damaged especially devastating brain cells. Torn blood vessels and fluid build up in the brain cause seizures and coma. Fluid can build up in the lungs making it difficult to breathe.
