Welp, it took the Philadelphia 76ers a few days to realize the error of their ways but they have finally apologized to Sevyn Streeter for not allowing her to sing the national anthem on Wednesday because she was wearing a shirt that read “We Matter”. The franchise has been bombarded with negative comments via social media and in general since news broke that they wouldn’t let her sing. Even the players and coach of the team were upset with the decision the front office made. They admitted the wrong decision was made in a statement today, where they invited Sevyn back with the hopes she will accept.

Here is the Sixers statement in full:

“We are sorry that this happened. After receiving feedback from our players, basketball operations staff and ownership group, we believe that the wrong decision was made, and Sevyn should have been welcomed to sing. We apologize to her, and in an effort to move the conversation forward, we have reached out to offer her an opportunity to return and perform at a game of her choice. We are waiting to hear back.”

The apology was necessary because they were wrong to begin with but there were also reports that the players themselves were going to do something of their own the next time they play at home as a form of protesting the decision. The people in the front office definitely didn’t want that and are hoping the apology will be enough.

Let’s hope she takes them up on their offer to come sing and does exactly what she wanted to do the first time.
