A Western Michigan University basketball player is facing murder charges after police say he shot and killed a fellow student at an off-campus apartment while trying to rob him for his phone and money. Joeviair Kennedy, a red shirt freshmen, was expected to be arraigned and charged with murder and armed robbery on Monday, over the death of 19 year old Jacob Jones.

Kennedy has already been removed from the team and suspended from the university itself, in addition to having all of his information erased from the athletic department’s website.

He had his entire life ahead of him and seemingly threw it all away over a phone and some chump change. It’s a tragedy all around, which was something that basketball coach Steve Hawkins spoke about while addressing the media.

“It’s a devastating loss for our university,” Hawkins said in his postgame press conference. “It’s a devastating tragedy for everybody involved. Lives were changed forever. We’re very, very respectful of that, and we’re very shook by the whole thing.”

Kennedy was averaging about three points per game while seeing about ten minutes of playing time per night.
