Lebron James won Sports Illustrated’s “Sportsperson Of The Year” award in part because of his continued willingness to speak out on social injustices and use his platform as one of the most popular athletes in the world to bring awareness. During his acceptance speech last night, he made sure to say that everything going on is bigger than him and paid homage to past greats in the sports world such as Jim Brown, Bill Russell and Muhammad Ali for paving the way for a night like last night.

“It’s never about the individual,” James said. “It’s always about the people behind him. It’s always about the people that’s behind the camera. It’s always about the people that don’t get the credit. It’s always about the people that sacrifice what they could be doing with their lives for the better of the individual.”

Even before the event, there was alot being made of what Lebron wore on the cover of Sports Illustrated when the magazine announced he was going to be the recipient this year. Many people noticed the safety pin he had on his suit, which is a symbol of solidarity and unity in the time since Donald Trump was elected as our next president. It is just another example of Bron standing with the people and not being afraid of his high profile

THANKFUL, GRATEFUL, HUMBLED, BLESSED, THANK YOU!!! #StriveForGreatness? #RWTW? #TheKidFromAkron? #JamesGang?

This is Lebron’s second time winning the award, which puts him with Tiger Woods as the only people to win Sportsperson of the Year twice. The award was well deserved for Lebron and to be honest, this is something he could be in the running for every year.
