North Carolina coach Roy Williams is not a fan of President Trump and his twitter habits. While it might seem odd that a college basketball coach is even talking about the President at a press conference during this time of the season, there is some context to it.

Earlier in the week after Syracuse lost in the first round of the ACC tournament at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, coach Jim Boeheim mentioned that the conference tournament should be in New York every year, or at least the major cities within the conference, which would also include Washington D.C. and Atlanta. He made it a point to say the conference gains absolutely nothing by having it in Greensboro, NC, which is a relative small city but basically the home of the conference for decades.

As you might think, other coaches in the conference didn’t necessarily agree with Boeheim’s northeast bias, even if he is correct. It was at this point after the Tar Heels won on Thursday that Williams was able to transition his answer to something that included Trump.

He was asked about New York being the media capital of the country when he mentioned social media and how that has changed things about media markets.

“Now everybody’s has got social media, and we don’t need The New York Times to find out what in the dickens is going on in the country. You know, our president tweets out more bullshit than anybody I’ve ever seen. We’ve got social media. In the old days, there’s no question, because it was the media capital of the world. But I’m not sure it is now.

So it wasn’t quite a rant about the President but goes to show that Williams probably isn’t a big fan of him if he used a question about Boeheim to reach and turn it into something about the President and his idiotic use of twitter. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a point himself though. In this day and age, people are going to come to events and the media are going to cover events regardless of where they are. While New York City is a great basketball place, it doesn’t mean that the tournament won’t be just as special in a small market, especially when media is not the same as it used to be.
