Besides adorning Madonna’s new grill and Reeboks designed by a jewelry designer, researchers have found a new use for gold. A research team at the University of Michigan is working to make an elastic gold conductor. At a distance, the material looks just like a piece of gold foil. Thanks to nanotechnology, which allowed the engineers to embed the gold foil with polyurethane, the foil can stretch to four times its size, stretching just like a rubber band. Liquidmetal, a “metallic glass” developed by a Caltech research team, is still too expensive to be used in large scale manufacturing, but that hasn’t stopped Cupertino’s finest from getting the technology to manufacture it in a factory on lock. Recently, Apple and Liquidmetal Technologies’s joint holding company, Crucible Intellectual Property, was awarded a patent for a technique to create sheets of the material between 0.1 and 25 mm thick and in up to three meters in width. While we may not know what this means specifically, you can be sure that Apple’s geniuses are working hard to make the next generation of iPhones and iPads lighter, sleeker and more desirable than their competition.

Surprisingly Samsung is trying to make the rebirth of the flip phone happen and considering they are the biggest smartphone vendor in the world they can actually make this happen. According to rumors it will be an Android powered Galaxy flip phone and will be out in sooner than you think. The handset is reported to be called the “Galaxy Folder” and will feature LTE connectivity, Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, 800 x 480 pixel display, and a dual core Snapdragon S4 processor.
