Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Fund Gets Anti-Abortion VP; Stops Funding Planned Parenthood Breast Exams

This is absolutely awful, but there is a silver lining in it all. First the back story: Breast cancer charity giant Susan G. Komen for the Cure on Tuesday did not renew a grant to Planned Parenthood to fund breast exams. Their new VP has publicly stated her opposition to abortion, a service provided at some Planned Parenthood facilities. Their official “reason” was that Planned Parenthood under investigation in Congress. Yet…the groups that prompted that investigation are anti-abortion advocacy organizations that have long criticized Planned Parenthood over the fact that some of its clinics offer abortions. Since pulling out, Komen has received TONS of criticism, and donations from others have come in all over to PP. AND, this has significantly increased awareness that Planned Parenthood does breast exams. I definitely didn’t know! More details on this debacle below.

Man Gave Semen Tainted Yogurt Samples To Several Women At Supermarket

A New Mexico supermarket worker admitted putting his semen in yogurt ingested by a female shopper provided similarly tainted samples to at least four other women. In a motion filed last week in U.S. District Court, Department of Justice lawyers argued that Anthony Garcia would not be adequately punished if a judge followed federal sentencing guidelines. Garcia, 32, has a “low criminal history” score that that puts him in the “same category as first time offenders who have never had a single encounter with law enforcement authorities,” prosecutors reported.

Garcia has pleaded guilty to adulterating the yogurt and making false statements to investigators. While facing up to three years in prison on the first count and five years on the second charge, federal guidelines call for him to receive significantly less than the statutory maximums.

“Such categorization does not fairly reflect the far more disturbing portrait” of Garcia, prosecutors wrote in their January 25 motion for an “upward departure.” Pictured above, Garcia is scheduled to be sentenced on March 1.
