Harriet Tubman was an African-American abolitionist, humanitarian and Union spy during the American Civil War. After escaping from slavery, into which she was born, she made thirteen missions to rescue more than 70 slaves using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. IFWT Celebrates Black History Month: Honoring Maya Angelou

To celebrate Black History Month, InFlexWeTrust will be honoring influential members of Black history daily throughout the month. Today, we are honoring Maya Angelou. Maya Angelou is an American poet and author who has written countless works including her first and famous, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Not only is Maya a writer, she has also worked as coordinator for Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an actress, director and producer of plays, movies, and public television programs, a journalist in Egypt and Ghana during the days of decolonization, as well as a college professor. She also worked with Dr. King Jr and Malcom X during the Civil Rights Movement. Although she is best known for her autobiographies, Angelou’s poems and books focus on racism, identity, family, travel, and more issues. IFWT Celebrates Black History Month: Honoring Josephine Baker

To celebrate Black History Month, InFlexWeTrust will be honoring influential members of Black history daily throughout the month. Today, we are honoring Josephine Baker. Baker was a French actress, dancer, and singer. She became a French citizen in 1937 and became known as a political icon and international musician. Baker became known for her nicknames, “Bronze Venus”, the “Black Pearl”, and the “Créole Goddess”. She had countless contributions to the Civil Rights Movement as well as World War II when it came to fighting the French Resistance. Baker was the first African American female to star in a major motion picture, Zouzou in 1934. Read more about her below.

Rosa Parks was an African-American civil rights activist, whom the U.S. Congress called “the first lady of civil rights”, and “the mother of the freedom movement” after famously refusing to give up her bus seat for a white passenger in 1955.
