I didn’t really start noticing that until the past couple seasons, so I am not sure if it had been a career long thing, but the reason behind it is nasty. Kobe was asked by the L.A. Times about him always having his jersey in his mouth. His quote leaves a nasty taste in your mouth, literally! He was quoted as saying “It’s disgusting, but my father taught me when your mouth gets dry, just suck the sweat out of your own jersey. There’s no bravado to any of it; it’s just a disgusting little trick.” Nasty! But it obviously works for him.
