12-Years A Slave actor, Benedict Cumberbatch put himself in a position that may be hard to pull back from. “I think as far as colored actors go, it gets really difficult in the UK, and I think a lot of my friends have had more opportunities here [in the U.S.] than in the UK, and that’s something that needs to change,” Cumberbatch said to PBS talk show host, Tavis Smiley. The term “colored” being a possible game-changer for the English native. This slipping in the midst of him speaking on inequality among black actors in the U.K. Cumberbatch has since felt major guilt for the term and release a statement of apology. A teacher at The Charter Schools of Boynton Beach in Florida has been suspended for giving her 8th grade students an English lesson using Lil Wayne lyrics. Although that sounds like a class I would LOVE to be in, the parents of the kids are outraged due to the explicit content in the lyrics. The teacher used Wayne’s “6 Foot, 7 Foot” song off of his The Carter IV album. A representative from the school said, “The lesson was for students to learn to identify literary devices. The teacher had already introduced Edgar Allen Poe and Shakespeare. Students were having difficulty grasping the concepts of literary devices such as: pun, simile, metaphor, so the teacher used colloquial material. This material did not meet the school’s standards and was not approved. The teacher recognizes that it was totally inappropriate for a school assignment.” Do you think using material such as rap lyrics to help kids grasp certain concepts in the classroom is a good idea? I don’t understand what is wrong with some people. I thought the interview was great, some of you need to stop judging. Be happy that the man just won the BCS National Championship. Geeeeez-us. A lot of this controversy stemmed from Dee Dee McCarron’s tweet asking if she was listening to English as Winston gave his speech. SMH. She quickly deleted the tweet, but it was too late and many are calling her racist. She later apologized. While there were some that criticized Jameis, those like LeBron James, Reggie Bush & Lil Wayne applauded him. Jameis took to Twitter with his reaction. Check it all out…
