Apple Music May Have Hurt Drake’s Chances Of “Hotline Bling” Hitting #1

Earlier this month, Drake’s “Hotline Bling” was on a steady climb on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It’d gotten all the way up to number two, and was looking like it may finally be the FIRST number one record for Drizzy ever (can you believe that?)! Naturally, he was excited. “I spend my life trying to make waves for the city I am from,” he wrote on Instagram a few weeks back. “No accolades really matter to me other than the fact that I have never had a billboard number one. If I get my first number one during the month of October it will be the biggest moment of my career to date (in my mind)…” The following week, he’d strategically release the video to the song, complete with hilarious dance moves that guaranteed viral memes and Vines for weeks to come, and conversations galore. Surely, that would give the song that push to number one, right? Nope, and it seems that Apple Music is the reason why.

Drake Addresses “Hotline Bling” Comparisons To “Cha Cha”

Since before the full version of Drake’s “Hotline Bling” even dropped, it was getting comparisons to D.R.A.M.’s breakout hit, “Cha Cha.” So much so, sites even assumed it was a remix of the song when a short clip of Drake performing it at a friend’s wedding went viral. When it was released in full, however, Drake made no reference to D.R.A.M., and the two were quickly differentiated – despite the fact they have a VERY similar beat. D.R.A.M. has remained quiet about it since its release in July, but following a performance in Drake’s hometown of Toronto earlier this week – the same night that Drake dropped the highly-discussed “Hotline Bling” video – he had to let something off his chest. Taking to Twitter that night, the Virginia artist said he feels he got “jacked,” and now Drizzy is addressing the claims. In an unreleased excerpt from his FADER interview from last month, Drake compared the situation to a riddim in Dancehall.

It’s been a helluva year for actor turned rapper, Drake; the good and the bad. Right now, it’s one of those low moments because he is yet again being accused of biting someone else’s music. Months back, when Drake released his “Hotline Bling” single, while catchy, it was quickly compared to upcoming artist D.R.A.M.’s single “Cha Cha.” During the Toronto rapper’s release, Beats 1 – the single was first heard on the Beats 1 Radio show OVO Sound – even tweeted the single’s title as “Hotline Bling (Cha Cha Remix), however, things have become a tad big shaky with D.R.A.M. feeling jacked and speaking out on it.
