Olympics/NBA: Jerry Colangelo says other countries need to ‘get their act together and compete’

Many people think the international basketball teams are getting better.  The NBA has been making a grand effort to make basketball more of an international sport.  They not only host preseason games in other countries, they’re also drafting and signing more international players.  When the Olympics comes around, many of those players go and play for their country, thus improving the competition.  For example, Spain has been a major contender against the U.S., as well as France and Australia is showing vast improvement.  But Team USA beat Serbia in the 2016 men’s basketball Olympic Finals in a very lopsided game where the final score was 96-66.  Speaking after the U.S. team won a third straight gold medal, USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said other countries need to find a way to be more competitive.

NBA: Kyrie Irving Gets Closer To His Olympic Dream With Mini-Camp Invite

The videos of Kyrie Irving crossing everyone up and breaking ankles during the Team USA scrimmages remains fresh in my mind.  In fact the young point guard dazzled everyone so much they wondered why he wasn’t apart of Team USA in their trip to the London games but that team was stocked as it was and there was no one worthy of being kicked off.  Irving kept his Olympic dreams alive however and even turned down playing with Australia in order to preserve his chances with Team USA in the future.  It’s working out well for the star guard as he’s gotten a very special invite.  Read more after the jump.
