(Video) Take A Look Into Kamaiyah’s Life In ‘A Good Night In The Ghetto’ Mini-Doc

After dropping her critically acclaimed debut mixtape, A Good Night In The Ghetto, this Spring, Oakland rapper Kamaiyah has been steadily building a name for herself in music. She’s landed on songs with the likes of Drake and YG and has been performing coast to coast, but nothing (yet) was more special than her sold-out show in her hometown just last month. I had the pleasure of attending alongside my Hot 97 co-worker Scottie Beam, and it was that kind of moment that is exactly why I wanted to work in music. To be able to be there for the journey of an artist that I listen to regularly and see moments from the first mixtape, to the first sold-out show, to eventually touring the world, topping charts and selling out arenas is an amazing thing. Though I knew already, being able to see fans’ reaction to their hometown hero that night confirmed to me once more – Kamaiyah is going to be a superstar. In a new mini-documentary premiered by XXL, Yaya gives us a tour of East Oakland and provides a glimpse into her upbringing, all the way up to the big show that night.

Up and coming rapper Kamaiyah, who hails from the Bay Area has released one of the best projects so far this year with her mixtape, “A Good Night In The Ghetto.” Today she drops the visuals to the final track on the tape, “For My Dawg” which serves as a dedication to her friends Cocaine James who passed due to complications from cancer in April and Fred who was murdered in 2015. The video is very touching. Watch the visuals after the jump and make sure you listen to “A Good Night In The Ghetto” which is available now.

Newcomer Kamaiyah Has A Drake Collab On The Way

21-year-old Kamaiyah is one of the hottest artists coming out of the Bay Area. The Oakland native saw regional success in 2015 with “How Does It Feel,” paving the way for her highly-buzzed about debut mixtape, A Good Night In The Ghetto, last month, multiple SXSW performances and a spot on XXL’s list for potential 2016 freshmen. You know what else it did? It got the attention of none other than Drizzy Drake, that’s what. It’s not new news that Drake has his finger on the pulse of what’s hot, as he’s consistently co-signed newcomers over the years and given their career an extra boost. Whether with an Instagram post (like Kodak Black) or hopping on their bubbling song (like Future, Migos, Fetty Wap), Drake has had a helping hand in making many of yesterday’s relative unknowns into today’s favorites. (I stress the phrase “helping hand,” though – let’s be clear that these artists were already doing their thing pre-Drake, hence why they even caught his attention. Hell, it still remains to be seen whether he’s only helping them just to maintain his own relevance or actually cares, but that’s neither here nor there…)
