NBA: Lakers Name Magic Johnson President of Basketball Operations; Fire Mitch Kupchak & Jim Buss

Los Angeles Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss announced today that the team has named Earvin “Magic” Johnson as President of Basketball Operations. In addition, General Manager Mitch Kupchak has been relieved of his duties, effective immediately. Furthermore, Jim Buss will no longer hold his role as Lakers Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations.

Magic Johnson is the king of stating the obvious and in his latest comments, the former Los Angeles Lakers star says their fans are now tired of losing.  From the Showtime Lakers to the prime Kobe era, the Lakers were royalty in the NBA for a LONG time.  They’ve since lost their biggest star, missed the playoffs for three consecutive years, posted the worst record in franchise history each of the past two seasons, and have gone through three coaches in the process.

NBA: Lakers Were Reportedly Fined For Magic Johnson Tweeting About Lebron And Kevin Durant

Over the summer, Magic Johnson respectfully asked the Lakers to relieve him of his honorary title of team Vice President. That move came after reports were circulating about the potential of tampering charges against the Lakers in response to tweets he sent out about players on other teams at the time. Those players were Lebron James, Kevin Durant and DeMar DeRozan. In a recent ESPN story however, the move to demote himself didn’t work as the franchise was still fined anyway.
