Sports: President Obama Backs Adidas Efforts To Change Team Names That Are Offensive

The whole controversy surrounding the name of the Washington Redskins has been going on for years now. The more time that passes, the screams for the name to be changed seem to get louder and louder, along with more pressure from certain people. One of those people now happens to be the most powerful man in the country in President Obama, who isn’t jumping on the bandwagon to change the name but is making it clear it’s something that needs to be talked about.

NFL: Federal Judge Orders Cancellation of Washington Redskins Trademark Registration

There’s protests and ongoing talks about the Washington Redskins name, with many people feeling like it should be changed while ownership has tried several ploys to prove it isn’t offensive.  Well another step has been taken in support of the former as a federal judge in Northern Virginia ordered the cancellation of the Washington Redskins federal trademark registrations on Wednesday.

Crazy Horse was and is a legendary Oglala Lakota indigenous (aka Native American) warrior–hero. A 500+ foot memorial has been being carved in larger than life stone in his memory since 1948!–in the Black Hills of Custer County, South Dakota. Though we can finally put a face to it, this generation of dedicated builders say they’ll be dead before the epic Crazy Horse Memorial Still Being Built is fully finished.

Apparently Washington Redskins owner Dan Synder doesn’t care about public relations or the outlook of his team as he’s fighting to keep the name and doing whatever possible.  His latest move is a lawsuit against the five Native Americans who complained about the name to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The fight to get the Washington Redskins to change their name is far from over.  At least 2,000 Native Americans carrying signs, playing drums and chanting “Who are we? Not your mascot!” began gathering on the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium on Sunday morning to stage what they hope will be the largest-ever protest against the name of the Washington Redskins.

I may be wrong here, but I just don’t agree that the Redskins should change their name.  I agree with Dan Snyder on this and hope he doesn’t give in.  I’d love to hear from some Native Americans on their view of this???  Ten members of Congress are urging the Washington Redskins to change their name because it is offensive to many Native Americans.  More details after the jump…
