An Air New Zealand flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Auckland on Thursday after flames were seen shooting out of one of the plane’s engines, Stuff reports.
The plane, a Boeing 767, took off on Thursday afternoon with 206 passengers and 10 crew members on board en route to Perth, Australia.
The plane was reportedly airborne for less than a minute when flames were seen shooting out of one of the plane’s engines. The captain then informed passengers that there had been an engine failure.
A Perth-based passenger told Stuff (watch here) that the plane was “taking off like normal” when he saw “four sets of flames” come out of the engine and there were “three big bangs.”
One passenger, Denise Ferris, was with her mother on the flight, and told Stuff that they started praying. “It was really scary. When the plane took off there was this huge noise and the plane rocked. When the pilot and stewardess came on we could tell by their voices they were really concerned.”
The captain briefed passengers saying that he flames coming from an engine were “not unusual” after shutting one down.
A unnamed man was driving near the airport when he saw the flames, telling Stuff: “We were driving along and I was watching a plane climb and its left engine just threw some fire out the back.” He said there were three “decent balls of flame” coming from the engine.
The passengers have been taken to an Auckland hotel and will try again at 1am on Friday morning.
The Associated Press reports that the company has not ruled out a bird strike.
