The two brothers, ages 8 and 10, were killed by 25-year-old Joseph Winchester at their home in Spring, a community just north of Houston, KHOU 11 News reported.

Authorities have not released the names of the children, nor said how they were related to Winchester.

“It is disturbing because of the ages of the children,” said Sgt. Felipe Rivera of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, KPRC 2 News reported.

The horrific murder-suicide took place around 5:40 p.m., police said.

Winchester stabbed the two boys, then went outside to shoot himself.

The 10-year-old died at the scene, but the 8-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The family living at the home on Darby Way included several adopted children, KHOU 11 News reported. Another child was home during the attacks but was not injured.

“For all we know, the little red-headed boy was upstairs and heard popping and he came down the steps,” a neighbor, Deanna Bowlds, told KHOU 11.

“And I don’t know what he saw, but he went and flagged down one of the Boy Scout dads and asked him to call 911 for him.”

Authorities have yet to offer any motive for the killings.
