A week ago, we lost hip-hop legend Heavy D and there was no exact cause known at the time. Looks like we’re still going to have to wait to find out the reason. The L.A. coroner’s office has deferred judgement on what lead to Heav’s untimely death, “pending the results of toxicology tests.” More details below.

Determining the exact cause of death could take a few weeks, according to the report. A spokesman for the coroner, Ed Winter, said that running tox tests on relatively young people—Heavy D was 44 when he passed away—is normal procedure. “We need to see what’s in his system,” he said.

Heavy D, who had a string of hits in the late 1980s and ’90s, died last Tuesday, November 8, in California.

An open memorial for the late rap star is scheduled for Thursday, while a private funeral is set to follow Friday, both in Mount Vernon, New York. Diddy and Rev. Al Sharpton are expected to speak at the latter.
