A zookeeper has died after being attacked by a pack of wolves in a zoo enclosure today.

The 30-year-old female employee, who had worked with the pack of eight wolves since they were puppies, was by herself in the pen when the savaging happened.

Workers at the Kolmarden Wildlife Park, Sweden’s largest zoo, first realised that something had gone wrong when their colleague did not answer her radio.

Zoo workers, one of whom was armed, and paramedics formed a human chain and entered the pen but it was too late.
Zoo director Mats Höggren said there were no witnesses to the attack at the park, which is located 90 miles south of Stockholm.

The zoo’s president Mats Olsson added: “It has been a sad day at KolmÃ¥rden and our thoughts are with the families.

“We are shocked by this incident and are now trying to process what has happened.”
