Ramon Sessions will not exercise his $4.55 million player option with the Lakers and will become a free agent on July 1, the Los Angeles Times reports. The Lakers, of course, can still sign Sessions as a free agent.

“Ramon has carefully considered this decision,” the point guard’s agent, Jared Karnes, told The Times. “He had to make a career decision and ultimately decided to do what was best in providing stability and longevity for him in the NBA, and this could only be achieved through a multi-year contract.”

Acquired in a deadline-day trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers, Sessions quickly earned the starting job with the Lakers and played well in the regular season, averaging 13.7 points and seven assists. He struggled in the playoffs, however, as his production slipped to 9.7 points per game, on 37.7 percent shooting, and 3.6 assists.

Sessions told The Times in April that while he was leaning toward testing the market, “I want to be here. I don’t know what that means or how that’s going to happen. It ain’t no secret. I’ll tell anybody that. I tell Mitch Kupchak. I tell my agent. I want to be here. Period. For a long time.”

Still, the feeling around the league is Sessions can command a more lucrative deal somewhere other than L.A.
