The deadly explosion that occurred on january 31st in a PeMex building left 37 dead. The cause of the explosion has been investigated to be the amount of methane gas building up through out the years within the building. Also:

“Methane gas combined with traces of hydrocarbons beneath the building triggered the explosion, the Attorney General’s Office said in a statement. Vapors from solvents used for cleaning also contributed to the blast, it said.”

Althugh an electrical spark is what set off the explosion, the biggest factor, the methane gas, had been accumulated mostly through fuel left behind from the previous gas company that was there. The methane gas is also used widely throughout Mexico city for heat and cooking purposes. The explosion the year was one of the worst explosions in a decade. Hopefully they don’t experience another disaster like this!
