According to a study by researchers from Florida State University’s College of Medicine, people who were discriminated against because of their weight, were more likely to suffer from obesity. Check for more info after the jump.

Citing that heavier people are often perceived as lazy, weak willed, and sometimes unsuccessful, researchers proved that those perceptions do more harm than help. The result of the verbal abuse lead more to distance themselves and often binge eat, whereas others –usually the ones doing the abusing– assumed that the negative perception would be used as motivation.

The study occurred with both high school students and adults who were teased or harassed for being overweight. In the study, both parties responded by skipping workouts or gym class, and eating more.
