Pilgrims gathered near the Ratangarh temple for a festival, yet fled once a rumor began spreading like wild fire that the very stature they were standing one may collapse, hit the jump for the full story!
As worshippers packed the streets near a temple in the Madhya Pradesh state during a festival, the celebrating quickly turned to mayhem when a rumor began and like the domino effect spread quickly!
Residents heard that the bridge that they were crossing towards the temple was going to collapse, an alarmed crowd began storming, trampling over others in order to get off of the structure. During the chaos many that tripped were stomped to death , others jumped off of the bridge and plunged to their death.
A local worshipper, Atul Chaudhary who survived the chaotic stampede, stated:
“Several people could be seen flattened to the ground in the midst of the melee,” “Some of the youngsters panicked and jumped into the swollen river.
I and my friends were close to the exit point and along with several others ran for safety. Scores of others were not so lucky.”
This is not the first time a stampede has occurred on the bridge, in 2007 another stampede hit the bridge causing for its renovation, making it now stretch 500M long.
The stampede resulted in the deaths of 91, 10 others are in in critical condition, officials are further investigating.
