In a stand to go from $7.25 an hour to $15 an hour, McDonalds, Wendy’s and Burger King workers go on strike all across the globe. The protests turned into arrests today in New York City’s Times Square as the demonstrators sat in the middle of the streets and blocked traffic. 14 men and five women were taken down by police.

It’s not just New York state where these strikes are taking place. Workers in more than 100 cities across the country have participated in the strike to make a higher earning. Detroit, Chicago and Las Vegas have taken part. It’s even gone as far as the strikers leaving their cities to form bigger crowds in other cities. St. Louis and Ferguson, MO workers took plane and train trips paid for by the striker’s coalition and SEIU to NYC.

Although blocking intersections may not be the answer, there are some people who are in agreeance with the pay raise. New York State attorney general Eric Schneiderman issued a statement in support of the workers.

“Nobody who works 40 hours a week should have to live in poverty, and this starts with raising the minimum wage. I applaud the fast food workers across New York State who are standing up for their rights and fighting for a living wage.”

Although President Obama’s Labor Day speech on the increase gave workers hope, some say the process will happen over time.

McDonald’s says…

“We believe that any minimum wage increase should be implemented over time so that the impact on owners and small and medium-sized businesses — like the ones who own and operate the majority of our restaurants — is manageable.”
