With his fight against Maidana just days away, Mayweather gave some insight into when he plans on hanging up his gloves, and it will come sooner than many expected. Hit the jump for details.
Mayweather announced that he plans to retire in September 2015.
Via CBS Sports:
“I only got two more fights left [after Saturday] and after the next two fights I just want to build the Mayweather Promotions brand,” Mayweather said, according to ESPN. “My next fight is in May and my last fight is in September, so a year from now will be my last fight.”
The undefeated 37-year-old didn’t go into detail about with whom his final fights would be with, but he indicated they would be alluring.
“As of right now, my focus is on Maidana,” Mayweather said. “I can’t focus on the other two fights after that. I have to focus on Maidana. After that we can’t say who’s the next two are going to be but I’m pretty sure the next two will be exciting fights.”
Bob Arum, a promoter for Top Rank, has said that a fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao is likely to happen next year, which would delight boxing fans who have long wanted to see the matchup.
Mayweather put a lid on that talk, however.
“Not true,” he said. “I can’t say what the future holds, but Arum and Pacquiao is trying to sell tickets for the [fight with the] guy named [Chris] Algieri. Trying to sell tickets for that fight. I don’t know where they fighting, I don’t know anything about what Top Rank is doing.”
