The hamster named Pebbles is believed to have turned on an oven in the British family’s home, which caused a fire to start and almost suffocating the owner Tracey Hill and her 13-year old son. They are now left homeless. The fire caused more than $30,000 worth of damage. Hill says, “I can’t believe we’ve lost everything because of our pet hamster…but at least my son and I are still alive. We could so easily have been killed.” Hill goes on to say that she had a hard time trying to sleep the night before Halloween because Pebbles was making a lot of noise, so she moved the hamster into the kitchen and put the cage on top of the electric cooker so her dogs couldn’t get to it. But the next morning she found the oven switched on and the kitchen was filled with black smoke.

She says, “It’s a mystery how it happened. One theory is that the hamster was banging about so much that it caused the cage to slide around and press against the cooker switch.” Sadly Pebbles and two of the family’s dogs died in the fire. Hill and her son are now living in temporary housing.

Wow!
