Ismaaiyl Brinsley

While a majority of the focus on Ismaaiyl Brinsley has been the two NYPD cops he murdered before killing himself this past weekend, we cannot forget the woman that remains fighting for her life in a Baltimore hospital, that he shot prior to coming to New York.

Many are trying to paint this as an Eric Garner revenge shooting which takes away from the peaceful protesting and the REAL change we are hoping to work toward, but obviously this man had way deeper issues. Fortunately, she is expected to live.

According to police reports, Ismaaiyl Brinsley was at the Baltimore home of his on-again/off-again girlfriend, 29-year-old Shaneka Thompson, in the early hours of Saturday morning. Shaneka, an Air Force reserve and health insurance specialist with the Veterans Administration, was trying to convince he deranged man to not shoot himself as he had a gun to his head, which angered him and resulted in him shooting her in the stomach.

Shaneka’s neighbor, Yevette Seay, described the scene:

I could hear something going on and it wasn’t pleasant. Then I heard some screaming, then she went out onto her balcony and screamed for help. [Shaneka said] ‘He shot me, I don’t want to die, I don’t want to die.’

Shaneka wanted her to open up her door, but because Yevette was unsure of what was happening, she instead called 911, who she says arrived in “about 7 or 8 minutes.” She also said there was blood all over the carpet in the hallway.

Shaneka is in critical condition, but expected to survive. Prayers to her and her family!
