NYPD cops Rafael Ramos, and Wenjian Liu were both shot and killed in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, on Dec. 20th while sitting in their police cruiser. Detectives Endowment Association officials announced the details of the $1 million gift to members of both families of Rafael Ramos, and Wenjian Liu during a news conference at the union’s Manhattan headquarters. The family members of the murdered NYPD officers both received the $1 million from an anonymous Hong Kong donor. Union president Michael Palladino said, “In every tragedy there are individuals who step forward, step up to the plate.”

Liu’s father, Wei Tang Liu, said in Cantonese that he was very thankful for the donation. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens) states, “he’s just always expressing gratitude towards everyone for how much they have taken care of him and his whole family…he repeatedly, every time I speak to him, reminds us that Officer Liu was his one and only son. One and only child. And so obviously he is very heartbroken.” During the announcement, Ramos’ widow held tight to both of her sons’ hands. The benefactor who is nameless first approached the Chinese daily Sing Tao with the gift. The gift will be managed through the union’s widow and children’s fund. The donor’s wishes said that Liu’s father will receive $100,000 each year for five years, and Ramos’ two sons will get $500,000 for their educational fund.
