Joseph Bekken, 36, has taken higher education to a new plateau. The North Idaho College financial aid director gave out scholarship funds in exchange for sexual favors. How? Well, Craigslist of course.

If Craigslist isn’t the devil in disguise, I don’t know what is. Bekken made an attempt to solicit men (umm), women and couples for any sex favor you could think of. “Hello, I have a proposition for NIC [North Idaho College] students. E-mail me and we can discuss. M4W, M4M, M4MW,” read the ad on the popular website. When one student responded to the ad, Bekken replied, “I have some grant money that I can get applied to your account. I just look for some fun in return. I’m completely open. Sex, oral, etc. … watching.”

When the ad was spotted, Spokane, Idaho police department got wind and they then contacted the FBI, who created the student account in the name of Sheryl Roberts. After initial contact between Sheryl and Bekken, he transferred $587 into the student’s school account. A time and a place for the two to meet was set, and well, the financial aid director gone bad knocked on a door that had an FBI agent on the opposite side.

After admitting to the crime, the 36-year-old faces felony charges of solicitation of prostitution, burglary and using a computer in a scheme to defraud, and bribery. The financial aid director is now in Kootenai County Jail where he is being held on a $100,000 bail. During his first court appearance, Bekken made an attempt to lower the bond. “I’m not a flight risk, I’m not going anywhere,” he says to a judge. The crazy thing (yes, it can get worse) is, during his old gig at Grand Canyon University in Arizona, he frequently used Craigslist for sexual encounters. Damn bruh! Obviously, the $73,000 a year wasn’t enough to get some legal action. Tsk Tsk!
