The Emmy-winning host was fired over his racist remark that he said during a live segment on the entertainment news show “El Gordo Y La Flaca.” Figueroa’s comment came about when he was talking about a photo of make-up artist Paolo Ballesteros’ who transforms himself into female celebrities by using make-up. Paolo Ballesteros’ used makeup to transform his face into Michelle Obama.

Figueroa commented on the photo and said, “Mind you, you know that Michelle Obama looks like she’s part of the cast of “Planet of the Apes,” the film.” Host Raúl de Molina tried to save the comment by saying he thought Obama was very attractive. Vice President of Consumer and Entertainment Public Relations Ivelisse Malave confirmed that Figueroa had been fired immediately due to the remarks. The network had already taken down photos of the host from the shows’ web pages because his comment in no way reflected the values or opinions of Univision.

Figueroa offered a formal apology for what was said in a letter and he explained that it had been taken out of context. He also said that he was verbally notified that he was being fired because of a complaint from Michelle Obama’s office and that he felt Univision had publicly humiliated him.
