Lisa Raye had some extraordinary things to say in terms of race and branding herself as a Black woman. The seasoned actress kept it 100% real as she compared women of color’s brand image to other women’s in the industry. If there’s anyone who can speak on perseverance in the game it’s Miss. Lisa Raye.
The 47 year old (looking 27) has a few choice words as she appeared on a Houston based radio show. When asked how she has maintained longevity in this dog eat dog world, she attributes it to her consciousness of her surroundings and more specifically, consciousness of industry trends. Being aware that women of color have to hold themselves to a higher standard has allowed Lisa to remain resilient and untouched after all these years. Some women can exploit their sexuality by making sex tapes to get ahead and not be criticized for it, she feels Black women don’t have that luxury.
She uses Taylor Swift with a hint of Kim K as a main case study to her theory…
“Now Taylor Swift, we know she’s gone through a lot of people at her young age. She sings about it all the time. Let that be a Black girl, and it’s a problem… Let somebody make a sex tape and she be a Black woman and her career is ruined. She’s not going to parlay it into fashion, into stores, reality shows and marriage.”
The lady has a point. She’s officially taken all “Diamond”-like business women “wannabees” under her wing. Even now, after all she’s accomplished over the years she says people are still shocked when she talks her spirituality or views on race relations. Admittedly, she’s afraid for the future generations as she questions who will be the next leaders. While she still has the attention of the younger generation she plans on making the world a better place.
