IFWT_NYC Freddie Gray Protest

Update: The night is not fully over but there has already been at least 100 arrest in New York City at the Freddie Gray protest.

An estimated 1,000 protestors gathered at Union Square for the march for Freddie Gray then walked to East 17th Street in New York City. While on East 17th Street, about halfway down the block police took a stand and ordered protestors to get on the sidewalk. Some refused and started pushing officers. Causing two officers minor injuries.

Before the march police warned the protestors to walk on the sideway or they will be arrested. But the protestors chanted:

“no justice, no peace” and “hands up, don’t shoot” as dozens of police officers watched.

While marching the protestors blocked the entrance to the Holland Tunnel, shutting it down outbound as police blocked off the entrance inbound for an hour. As of now the tunnel has been re-opened but the march is now going throughout Lower Manhattan, Times Square and Midtown.

Original: Residents of Baltimore aren’t the only people outraged, as Freddie Gray protests spread to New York City. Today’s protest, organized by Millions March NYC, began in Union Square and stretched to Broadway, blocking the West Side Highway. Videos of the protest can be found on social media with the hashtags #ShutItDown and #ShutItDownNYC. There were arrests made, and reports of some violent activity as police blocked the protestors in on three sides.

People of all races got involved to show support for the Baltimore community. It has yet to be explained how or why Freddie Gray’s spinal cord was severed while in police custody. In this clip from a participant’s Vine, you can hear the chants of “Who’s Streets? Our Streets!”

One Love!
