New York State Police are investigating a possible sighting of the two convicted murderers who escaped from a maximum security prison two weeks ago. The search which seemed to have gone cold after investigators searched the surrounding areas with no sign of either of the men, may have warmed up just a little. Details after the jump.

According to police two men fitting the description of Richard Matt and David Sweat were spotting last week around June 13th in Steuben County, New York. Steuben is 300 miles south of the area that police have been combing through since their escape.

It is unclear why police did not take up this lead earlier.

Police state two men were seen walking close to a rail yard in Erwin and then also spotted again the next day in Lindley, New York going towards the border of Pennsylvania. Investigators have began interviews in both Eriwn and Lindley. They were able to obtain surveillance video that was first said to be inconclusive but has been sent to Albany for analysis.

Police have turned to hunters to help search for the escaped prisoners. State Police Maj. Charles Guess said, “We’re asking them to review video from wildlife or trail cameras to see if they see anything suspicious.” Police have already searched 600 miles of trails that lead from Dannemora, however a local hunter Jason Langdon pointed out that the area of woods is so large that investigators still have a lot more to do.

Matt was serving 25 years to life in prison for a 1997 kidnapping and beating, while Sweat was serving a life sentence after being convicted of killing a sheriff’s deputy in 2002. Joyce Mitchell, who worked at the prison is being charged with helping the two man escape. She has pleaded not guilty.
