Sandra Bland’s friends and family gathered at DuPage African Methodist Episcopal Church in Lisle, Illinois. Bland was an active member of this church where she spent much of her time being involved in Sunday school and the women’s ministries. The congregation gather at the funeral service celebrated her life and her outspoken nature.

A funeral atteendee said,

I thought it was important for me to be here because I felt the pain of many across the country about what happened because it was just so wrong and I wanted to pay my respects to the family by attending, and of course, saying goodbye to Miss Bland. I didn’t know her personally, but again, I feel the pain of so many across this country about the situation because it was so needless.

Family and friends passed out T-shirts in memory of Sandra with the saying #SandySpeaks. Sandra used that hashtag on videos that she made encouraging people to speak up about injustices.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.#JusticeForSandy
