If you read a lot about current happenings in hip hop then 9 times out of 10, you have come across a Rob Markman piece. Over the last few years, Rob has been a staple over at MTV News, in the hip hop division, where he worked as editor and oversaw projects for online and television. Prior to getting to MTV, Markman was already an established journalist as he had written for The Source, Vibe, XXL, and Complex; so, his resume is definitely impressive to say the least.

Aside from building a great career, he has also been able to gain the respect from many artists in the game and that was evident today from the various messages that were seen on social media outlets. In his new position with Genius, Rob will be overseeing the verified artist program and will work to help the expansion of the Genius brand.

Currently, Rob is a personality on SiriusXM’s Shade45 and his new position will entail having artists annotate their lyrics and conducting interviews with them. This is right up his alley. In a statement to Billboard, Rob says, “I’m very excited to be joining the Genius team. Yes, I am a music journalist, but I am a fan first,” and it is definitely great to be able to see such a staple in hip hop accomplish big things like joining a brand such as Genius. Rob also recalled buying classic albums like Reasonable Doubt and Illmatic and having discussions with friends about the true meaning of the lyrics on these albums. Now, he will be doing just that with the artists and getting the real answers.

For us journalists and bloggers in the hip hop world, it has to go without saying that if you want to be successful and gain the respect of the industry, Rob Markman is definitely the perfect model to follow.
