Back in June, Richard Matt and David Sweat, two escapees were being covered on just about every media outlet. The convicted murderers had busted out of the Clinton Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison. It was later found out that Matt and Sweat had some help with their escape plan, via Joyce Mitchell.

Months later, during an interview with TODAY’s Matt Lauer, Mitchell is speaking out on what really happened; of course everything she did was a forced act.

Now that one of the escapees is dead, the other is back in police custody, and Mitchell has given up her right to take her charges to trial, the 51-year-old mother of three reveals her relationship with the gentleman; she says everything she had done to help the men was because of threats on hers and her family’s lives.

“It started out as a flirtation thing, but that’s all it ever was. There was never any love between myself and Mr. Matt,” she said to Lauer. “There was never any actual sexual intercourse. “Mr. Matt had grabbed me a couple of times and kissed me. And then there was one point where he…wanted me to perform oral sex on him,” she adds. “I said no. And when I said no, he grabbed my head and pushed me down.”

Mitchell has plead guilty to providing tools for Matt and Sweat to escape. She could face up to seven years in prison.

“I deserve to be punished,” she told Lauer. “But, you know, people need to know that I was only trying to save my family.”

Mitchell does issue an apology, stating, “I am so sorry for everything that everyone went through because of me. I never, never wanted this to ever happen. Never. I would take it all back, if I could.”
