Kobe Bryant announced that he will retire at the conclusion of this season. Since the Lakers suck and will be nowhere near the playoffs, that means Kobe’s final game will be sometime in late April. That may not be his final game ever though since he is still a candidate to make the team that will travel to Rio for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Clearly Kobe is NOT one of the better players in the league so it’s hard to say he is really deserving of an Olympic roster spot. Then again, with his legendary status, seeing him ride off after another Gold medal could be kinda epic itself.

Team USA rep Craig Miller said Kobe is definitely being considered for the ’16 roster.

“Kobe is one of 34 players in the U.S. Men’s National team pool. The 12 players who will play for Team USA are selected from that pool.”

Miller says the final decision will come down to Kobe’s health and the overall composition of the team but it seems Bryant’s got a pretty good shot.

“Kobe’s been involved with the national team since 2007. It’s not like he has to prove himself.”

If Kobe winds up on the team it will be controversial despite the fact he is an all time great. There will be more deserving players who might feel some type of way. Regardless Team USA will head into Rio as the favorites.
