Sara Kruzan served 19 years in prison for murdering her pimp who she met at just 11-years-old. By age 16 Kruzan decided she’d had enough, so one night while her pimp planned a romantic evening for the two, she shot and killed him execution style. She was later charged as an adult and after a two-day trial was sentenced life in prison without the possibility of parole. It later came out that her lawyers, nor the district attorney, or even the judge knew about the legal exceptions that protected minors in Sara’s situation. Following a series of appeals, Sara Kruzan is finally home free and is speaking out about what she calls a miscarriage of justice.

He represented every man who had ever did anything to me.

Kruzan described killing the man who she said strangled her soul.

After she was finally able to share her side of the story an internationally recognized law firm took her case pro bono, eventually getting her released from prison.

While in prison Kruzan was described as the model inmate, even being recognized as the woman of the year. She created support groups and did community building activities with her fellow inmates. Not much has changed since her release, she is still speaking on panels and has her own non-profit to benefit women in her situation. Kruzan gives some credit for how she turned out to the inmates who nurtured her as a mother would while in prison.
