Who would have known that being in debt because of student loans can cause armed U.S. Marshall’s to show up to your home and arrest you. Paul Aker says he was at his home when he opened his door to seven armed U.S. marshals ready to arrest him over 29 year-old student loan of $1,500.

Ayer says,

“I am home, I haven’t done anything. Why are the marshals knocking on my door?”

I had no idea something like this could even happen.

Arne Duncan, who is a former secretary of education for the headlines-making Corinthian Colleges, says,

“You’d have to be made of stone not to feel for these students. Some of these schools have brought the ethics of payday lending into higher education.”

Federal resources are being used to take out the duties that a person would see as a low debt collector. Rep. Gene Green says,

“Private debt collection agencies are getting judgments against the owners of these debts (even, apparently, 29-year-old debts) secured in federal court with ease. After a judgment is secured, the agencies are apparently asking for (and being granted preposterous access to) the usage of armed U.S. marshals.”

This is pitiful!

Aker had to sign a payment plan in order to pay off the debt. Question is, how many other people will have to go through this?
