This is pretty foul on the part of the Yankees but this is what we should expect from them considering their history. They don’t like players who draw extra attention to themselves. They want their players to act according to how the franchise wants them to be, which is low key and quiet. They do not embrace players who express themselves and that has been that way pretty much their entire history. With that said as spring training is getting underway they are warning players to be more like the reserved and humble Russell Wilson and less like the flamboyant and emotional Cam Newton.

The Yanks had a session with their players as spring training starts on how to interact and deal with the media. They decided to use a video to portray the “right” way and “wrong” way to act and it compares how Russell Wilson handled his Super Bowl loss to the Patriots with grace and humility with how Cam acted after losing to the Broncos and walking away from the podium.

The Yanks are lame for this because you can’t put a label on the emotion of any athlete, especially one that just lost the biggest game of his life. While Russell and Cam did react in totally different ways, that doesn’t mean either way was “wrong”.

I get that the Yankees have always tried to hold themselves to a higher standard but they should have use another comparison.
