Every Year there are hundreds of honor killings in the country of Pakistan. The occurance is almost second nature in the Islamic State. Recently 15 year old Ambreen of the Islamic State of Pakistan has become the latest victim of the barbaric crime. Young Ambreen assisted her neighbors in eloping into marriage. This was seen by the village and its elders as a despicable crime being as how the two had no family permission to marry. Ambreen was helpless and could not avoid her fate once the judgement was handed down by village elders that she be killed. This 15 member council, also known in the culture as the Jirga, handed down the sentence after investigating the elopment. Some of these same council members added a hand in the actual murder of Ambreen. A crowd dragged young Ambreen from her home one evening. After sedating the young woman with drugs they tied her to a van. Then this van was set on fire with Ambreen inside. The girl burned alive as she lay there helpless, her life treated as though it were nothing. Not a breath of mercy for her life anywhere close in sight. Even her own mother who was among the arrested stood to help. Her mother was also a supporter of the killing, she knew about the orders to kill her daughter but did nothing to stop it. Stories like this sadly are a dime a dozen in the Pakistan Culture. Thankfully these monsters were brought to justice and hopefully the government will continue to strive to put this social taboo to a stop. Long live Ambreen and may her legacy bring safety all and shed much needed light on the disgrace that is honor killings.
