People have been waiting for Ronald Gasser to be arrested for shooting and killing former NFL running back Joe McKnight.  Gasser was finally arrested Monday night and charged with manslaughter.  Today Sheriff Newell Normand held a press conference to give more information about the case, but it turned out to be a bizarre presser in which the sheriff made himself the victim.

Normand fired back at the people who have criticized him for the way he’s handling the shooting investigation.  He read out loud, some of the hateful comments he and other leaders have received, not censoring it all, but instead including the n-word, and the word fa–ot along with several expletives.

He went on and on defending himself and other leaders who were criticized for letting Gasser go initially.  Normand says by not charging Gasser right away, they were able to get 10 hours of statements from him without a lawyer.  That makes sense, but instead of simply explaining his method, the sheriff went on a rampage similar to that of a child or angry teenager.

He also repeatedly blamed McKnight for his own death, talking about bad driving, bad language and bad behavior.  He also dispelled the notion of racism and practically told black people what they should fear, mentioning black-on-black crime.

When he finally explained what happened during the incident, Normand says it was a verbal altercation, that McKnight made threatening statements, was leaned over Gasser’s car, and Gasser who “felt threatened”, shot McKnight three times.  Normand also said that Gasser almost shot a Naval officer, pointing a gun at the man in uniform.  The man told Gasser that he does not want to shoot a Naval officer and to put his gun away, Gasser complied.  That military man is the one seen performing CPR on McKnight in the video I previously posted.

The arrest of Gasser is as you know not the end.  We still have to wait for the DA’s decision.  That controversial “Stand Your Ground” law is also in play.
