NBA: GM Billy King Admits the Brooklyn Nets Championship Window Has Closed

With a new billionaire owner and the move to the swanky Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the Nets wanted to make a big splash.  General manager Billy King went out and spent a fortune (ordered by Mikhail Prokhorov) to put together a championship contending team.  What resulted was the most expensive roster in NBA history and trading away the team’s future picks to get that squad of Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett which only made it to the second round of the NBA playoffs. The team has since made moves to lower the payroll and the overall age of the team.  As they rebuild, King admits that championship window they had has now closed.

NBA: Mikhail Prokhorov Backtracks on Promise to Get Married if Nets Don’t Win a Championship

Mikhail Prokhorov set a five-year maximum for a championship when he bought the Nets in 2010.  He even pledged to get married if his team didn’t win a title in that span.  He went all out in 2012 trying to build a championship team but just ended up with the most expensive payroll + luxury tax in NBA history.  And now it’s been five years and all Brooklyn has to show for their efforts is winning one playoff series.  So what about the Prokhorov’s pledge?

NBA: Nets Send Letter to Fans About Future Plans & Leave Out Deron Williams & Joe Johnson

There were reports all of last season about the Brooklyn Nets trying to trade Deron Williams and Joe Johnson but so far they haven’t been able to yield any viable offers.  Joe Johnson is set to make $24.9 million next season and Deron Williams is set to make $21 million next season (and $22.3 million the season after that).  The Nets just don’t see the two players in their future and the “star” players who were once part of the “Big 3” weren’t even mentioned in the team’s letter to the fans.
