If anybody is a cautionary tale about fireworks safety, it’s Jason Pierre-Paul. The New York Giants defensive end lost his index finger, his thumb and almost lost his career after a fireworks accident last Fourth of July. Luckily for JPP he was able to persevere through the injury and not only keep his career, but also able to be here to continue to enjoy life with his son. Now he’s taking part in a PSA about fireworks safety to help prevent something like that from happening to others.
The sports world was rocked that fateful Fourth of July weekend when news spread that New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul was involved in a fireworks accident. His condition was unknown and various “sources” gave different accounts, from he’s totally fine – to he lost his whole hand. Then ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted a photo of Pierre-Paul’s medical chart that showed that his right index finger had been amputated (Pierre-Paul later filed a lawsuit against ESPN and Schefter, it’s still pending). Now, eight months after the accident, JPP shared his story with Sports Illustrated.
News spread that Jason Pierre-Paul injured his fingers while playing with fireworks on the Fourth of July. There were rumors that he lost a finger but no one was quite sure if he did or how many then ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter got ahold of JPP’s medical records and posted them on Twitter. Schefter found himself under fire with many people upset that he went so far. Well now JPP is apparently taking action.
The New York Giants had some concerns going into Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers as defensive end, Jason Pierre-Paul made his 2015 NFL debut following a Fourth of July incident that left his hand mangled. The Giants pulled through with a victory and it was up to the Philadelphia Eagles to seal the deal.
Recently, the New York Giants have struggled to maintain a healthy roster, especially after losing two of their best, Jason Pierre-Paul and Victor Cruz. With both players out, the Giants have made some changes and have felt the consequences, falling just shy of multiple victories that would put their record at 7-1. Instead, the Giants are 4-4 and are welcoming the return of both key players.
