Nelson Mandela was laid to rest in his hometown of Qunu, South Africa, just a few days after his death at the age of 95. Strange that his death coincided with the release of a biopic about his life, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom. The biopic hit theaters less than a week before his death. The film, starring Idris Elba as Mandela, is based on Mandela’s autobiography, and goes through the journey of his early life to his 27-year prison sentence to his eventual South African Presidency. At the New York premiere of Mandela, Elba had some heartwarming words to share about his onscreen persona. Check out what he said below!

The emotional funeral took place in Mandela’s childhood town of Qunu, South Africa. His coffin sat in front of a crowd of 4,500 people and 95 candles burned on a dais to honor his 95 years of life. South Africans were told by police that they could not accommodate the large amount of mourners, therefore not everyone would be able to pay their last respects.
