Spike Lee To Receive Honorary Oscar At The 2015 Governors Awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences just unveiled its honorees for the 2015 Governors Awards, with Spike Lee landing the annual honorary Oscar.The Oscar org can have up to four honorees each year, this year its is Spike Lee, Gena Rowlands and Debbie Reynolds. Can you believe Spike Lee, only has one Oscar nomination, for Do The Right Thing‘s original screenplay in 1989.

STRAIGHT OUTTA…. Brooklyn? Spike Lee took it upon himself to dedicate a Brooklyn street name to his classic 1989 movie, Do The Right Thing. Stuyvesant Avenue has now been given a name change to Do The Right Thing Way, but only between Quincy Street and Lexington Avenue since that’s the area where the film was shot back in the day. This movie has played an influential part in shaping our current society for countless reasons, so it is only right for this street name change to occur. BK residents seem to be thrilled about it for the simple fact that Do The Right Thing is one of the more popular Brooklyn-based movies. Check out the new street sign in the gallery!

Some have always felt the name “Chiraq” is only promoting and embracing Chicago’s escalated rate of violence, that it’s played out or the stamp of an outsider. Some on the other hand think this might be a great look…and judging from Spike’s track record of profiling black life and culture–maybe the legendary director is just the man for the job. Spike found himself in the Bay Area last night to check out Golden State and when coach Steve Kerr asked him what he was doing there, he let him know why.
