(NME)–The singer, who had been strongly linked with the role, announced her casting during an appearance on US network ABC’s Good Morning America.

Beyonce said that it was an “incredible” honor to have been given the lead role in the movie.

“Clint Eastwood? Can you believe that? I can’t believe it still. When I met with him I was just in awe. I’m so, so honored that he believes in me. And I can’t wait to do this film,” she commented.

Leonardo DiCaprrio has been touted for the male lead role in the film, which would see him portray an ageing film star who helps a young actress find fame.

A Star Is Born, which is due to be released next year, is a remake of three earlier versions, which came out in 1937, 1954 and 1976.

Janet Gaynor, Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand have previously played the lead in the film.

Meanwhile, Beyonce’s new album ‘4’ is set to take the Number One spot in the albums chart tomorrow (July 3) following her acclaimed performance at Glastonbury last month (June 26).
