Harrington has been treated for a broken clavicle, broken ribs and a punctured lung, his father, John Harrington, said Monday afternoon. Lacerations to his head required staples to close, and he was undergoing X-rays for possible fractures to his heel bones.

Harrington, 33, was on a recreational ride from his home in Northwest Portland on the Springwater Corridor trail Sunday, and wearing a helmet, before being hit. Harrington merged onto Southeast Foster Road during his ride, and was on a stretch of road without a designated bike lane when a car struck him from behind, according to his father.

John Harrington said his son was “riding appropriately but had to make this diversion” owing to the lack of a bike lane, and that the motorist never saw him before the collision.

“He hit him at a pretty good lick,” John Harrington said without offering an exact estimate of the driver’s speed.

Multiple news reports named the car’s driver as Derek Johnson, 24. He reportedly remained at the scene after the accident and was cited by police for following too close.

Doctors were still working Monday to stabilize Joey Harrington’s pain levels and to continue assessing his wounds, which are not considered life-threatening.

“He was really, really lucky,” John Harrington said.

Harrington went 25-3 in two-plus seasons as Oregon’s starting quarterback from 1999-2002, leading the Ducks to victories in the 1999 Sun Bowl, 2000 Holiday Bowl and 2002 Fiesta Bowl. He was the program’s first Heisman Trophy finalist, and is fourth in school history with 6,911 career passing yards.

After being selected with the No. 3 pick in the 2002 NFL Draft, Harrington played seven seasons professionally. He has worked in radio as a football analyst since. He and his wife, Emily, had a son, Jack, in 2009.
