The world has lost a boxing legend as Hector “Macho” Camacho was taken off life support early this morning. His mother Maria Matias made the fatefully decision after doctors declared him brain dead and said there was nothing else they could do. Matias waited for three more of his sons to see him before having the machine disconnected despite the protests of Camacho’s eldest son. Read more after the jump.
“I lost my son three days ago. He’s alive only because of a machine,” Matias said. “My son is not alive. My son is only alive for the people who love him,” she added.
The former champion’s mother has the final say in the matter, but his eldest son, Hector Camacho Jr., said he wanted to keep his father alive. “He’s going to fight until the end. My father is a boxer,” the son said.
Camacho was shot in the face while sitting in a parked car with a friend in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The friend, 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, died at the scene of the shooting. Police found cocaine on the driver as well as in the car. Camacho is known as much for boxing as he is for his issues outside of the ring, including drugs and domestic disputes. The investigation is still ongoing.
Despite his personal issues, Camacho was a beloved fighter who fought professionally for three decades. He was known for his skill and flamboyance. He will definitely be missed.
