The 20-year-old German woman was snorkeling at Palauea Beach shortly after 5 p.m. when a shark bit her right arm off (from the shoulder down). The visibility of the waster was limited; which allows sharks to attack their prey easier without being seen.

Bystanders heard the woman scream, and they brought her back onto land using a kayak. She was then taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center.

One witness explained the scene stating, “We heard screaming from the water and it was this unbelievable scream like I’ve never heard before. I stopped working and I said the only time anybody would scream like that would be if they were being attacked by a shark.”

This was the the seventh shark attack this year in Hawaiian waters. Only two deaths have occurred due to shark attacks in the past couple decades; one in 2004 and another in 1992.
